The Root of All Evil? is a television documentary, written and presented by Richard Dawkins, in which he argues that the world would be better off without the divisive forces of religion.

I have really enjoyed this, not just for the vigor in the intellectual and scientific arguments presented, but also for the fact that we need more documentaries like this to counter balance some very extreme views about religions out there.

By saying this, I don’t wish to present myself as an atheist, for I am not. But in terms of religion, while I do believe that there is something much greater than ourselves out there, I have over and over again gone back to the premises that all scriptures were written by men, not God or gods. And our civilisation has come very far to render a lot of these irrelevant.

Yea, how nice it would be, to not have any religion that claims it is the ultimate truth, that is the cause of wars, murders and all other forms of ‘evil’ but a common Law of the Universe, whereby faith is about following some common sense and basic principles about humanities. It doesn’t take a ‘religion’ to have these in our heart and the way we find our place in the world.

Yes, you are right on as to the two reasons I thought I first saw this program and decided to run it here.

I always enjoy Richard Dawkins! I’ve read his book “The God Delusion” which covers many of the same points mentioned in this documentary. He is right that we seem to be making progess as a society but it is somewhat scary to me the degree of tenaciousness that religion has for hanging on in our modern rational world.
